London Ambulance Service Sends Lifesaving Fleet to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Since the onset of the conflict in 2022, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) has donated a total of fifty-nine retired ambulances to Ukraine, as reported by the service.

These ambulances are being utilized to provide care to individuals in conflict zones and civilians who have sustained injuries, and they have been entrusted to the charity British-Ukrainian Aid.

The most recent contribution consists of nine ambulances, which have now reached the frontline.

Chris Rutherford from LAS expressed, “We take pride in being able to assist and continue to keep our colleagues, who are working on the ground to care for those affected by the conflict, in our thoughts.”

He noted, “While these ambulances have completed their service in London, they still hold the potential to save lives in Ukraine.”

According to LAS, these vehicles are no longer operational within their frontline fleet because the service has transitioned to a more environmentally friendly vehicle collection.

Among the total of 59 ambulances, there are 10 that were initially donated at the war’s outbreak by a group of volunteers who transported the vehicles, loaded with medical supplies, to Poland for transit into Ukraine to support humanitarian efforts.

In 2022, a team of 26 LAS volunteers traveled 1,100 miles (1,770 km) over a span of three days to deliver these ambulances.

These vehicles were filled with medical supplies donated by NHS organizations throughout London, including ventilators, syringe pumps, tourniquets, wound dressings, blizzard blankets, and personal protective gear.

Since then, Ukrainian drivers have picked up the ambulances, which are loaded onto trucks, and transported them to the regions where they are most needed.

Nadia Pylypchuk from British-Ukrainian Aid remarked, “In Ukraine, every bit of equipment or assistance is invaluable, regardless of its size.

“We are immensely grateful to the London Ambulance Service for their generous donations, which are indeed saving lives.”
