On Saturday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that its military had regained control of the second to last village in the Kursk region still occupied by Ukrainian forces. This development follows a recent unexpected counteroffensive by Moscow in the strategically important border town of Sudzha.

“In the course of offensive operations, units from the Northern Group of Forces succeeded in liberating the village of Oleshnya,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated in a message shared on Telegram.

Ukraine’s unexpected advance into the Kursk region in August represented the most significant ground offensive against Russia since World War II. However, in recent months, Russian forces have managed to reclaim much of the territory that Ukrainian troops initially seized in this border area.

In March, a significant operation was conducted by hundreds of Russian special forces who covertly traveled 15 kilometers through an abandoned pipeline that had previously transported Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, orchestrating a surprise attack on Ukrainian positions in Sudzha.

Now that Oleshnya has fallen under Russian control, Gornal is the sole remaining village in the Kursk region still occupied by Ukrainian troops, located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) south of Oleshnya.

Additionally, on the same day, a Ukrainian drone strike targeting a vehicle in Russia’s Kursk region resulted in a woman’s death and injuries to a man and a child, according to Acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein, who reported on Telegram.
