Councillors are set to review proposals for a zipline extending from the ArcellorMittal Orbit tower located in Olympic Park during their meeting next week.
ZipWorld, the entity managing the tower, must obtain planning approval from both Tower Hamlets and Newham councils for the intended zipline.
The proposal emphasizes that the zipline would provide “a distinctive and thrilling experience,” with an anticipated influx of 60,000 additional visitors annually.
As per the plan, the zipline would initiate from the tower on the Newham side, while crossing into Tower Hamlets on the opposite side of the River Lea, where a new structure is planned.
On 22 October, Tower Hamlets councillors are scheduled to review a planning request for the return tower located by Marshgate Way during a strategic development committee session.
According to a report from planning officials, this new tower will stand nearly 39 meters (128 feet) tall.
Riders will not exit within the borough; instead, they will be transported back to the Orbit in Newham.
Planning officers believe that the return tower will not adversely affect the designated Metropolitan Open Land and are recommending that councillors approve the proposal.
Nevertheless, the application from ZipWorld to Newham Council for the launch platform connected to the Orbit is still awaiting evaluation.
Additionally, the submitted plans to both councils indicate that ZipWorld aspires to add a “gravity descender” ride to the tower, with a separate planning request to follow.
They predict that, when both attractions are operational, they could draw an additional 60,000 visitors to the tower each year.
