On Tuesday, a court in St. Petersburg sentenced a man to 12 days in jail for possessing items linked to an “extremist organization.”
Artyom Repin was taken into custody on Saturday for having a goblet adorned with a pentagram and featuring the occult icon Baphomet, alongside a book titled “Satanic Rituals.” He was en route to the Necrocomiccon festival celebrating cosplay and popular culture, as stated by the court. Repin mentioned during the hearing that he was apprehended at the festival’s entrance while wearing makeup and dressed as a priest.
The Necrocomiccon event, which focuses on comic book culture, fantasy, and mysticism, was set for November 1-2 but was canceled just hours into the festivities following the initiation of a criminal investigation against its organizer, Alexei Samsonov.
Authorities accused Samsonov, a long-time St. Petersburg resident and citizen of Kazakhstan, of presenting a fraudulent migration card to police, which claimed his stay in Russia was extended until May 1, 2026. However, officials reported that the stamp on this card was not legitimate.
Samsonov now faces charges for breaching migration regulations, has been fined, and the court has ordered his transfer to a detention facility for potential deportation until January 29, 2026. His current situation remains uncertain.
In July, Russia designated the so-called “International Satanist Movement” as an “extremist” group.
Lawmakers characterized it in April as a “misanthropic ideology that justifies evil” and alleged that it aimed to undermine Russia’s traditional religions.
