Investigator in Russia Steps Up Rescue Efforts for Stranded Climber in Kyrgyzstan

Russia’s lead investigator, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed his team on Monday to urgently collaborate with emergency services to assist climber Natalia Nagovitsyna, who has been stranded on a mountain in Kyrgyzstan. Local authorities had previously suspended search operations due to adverse weather conditions.

Nagovitsyna, 48, has been stuck at an elevation of approximately 7,000 meters for two weeks after suffering a leg injury while descending Victory Peak, the tallest mountain in the Tien Shan range, on August 12.

Despite several rescue attempts, efforts to bring her down have failed, including a helicopter crash in the mountainous region and the tragic death of an Italian climber who was attempting to save her.

Last Tuesday, officials in Kyrgyzstan reported that a drone search discovered Nagovitsyna alive in a damaged tent, a week after her accident. However, experts have since expressed increasing concerns regarding her chances of survival as her supplies of food, water, and fuel dwindle.

On Monday, her son Mikhail expressed relief upon seeing the drone footage confirming her survival and urged Russian officials to facilitate another drone flight. Russian climbers had noted earlier that harsh weather conditions hindered further drone operations.

Following Mikhail’s video appeal shared on social media, Bastrykin took action, prompting coordination with Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry to “implement comprehensive measures” for her rescue.

Kyrgyz authorities later classified Nagovitsyna as officially missing after they could not ascertain her current status.

Reportedly, her husband Sergei passed away from a stroke in 2021 while attempting to climb Khan Tengri, the second-highest peak in Central Asia, according to Russian media sources.
