Sir Sadiq Khan remarked that New Yorkers opted for “hope over fear” in their recent mayoral election, mirroring the choice made by Londoners.
On Tuesday night, Zohran Mamdani created history by becoming New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, as well as the youngest since 1892.
London’s mayor drew a connection between his own electoral journey and Mamdani’s achievement while seemingly taking a jab at both U.S. President Donald Trump and his predecessor Boris Johnson.
In a post on X, Sir Sadiq declared: “New Yorkers faced a distinct decision—between hope and fear—and just like we saw in London, hope prevailed.”
He congratulated Mamdani, stating, “Big congratulations to @ZohranKMamdani on his groundbreaking campaign.”
The two mayors share commonalities: both identify as social democrats and have made history as the first Muslim mayors of their respective cities.
Additionally, they both seem to hold a similar perspective regarding Donald Trump.
Mamdani’s triumph came even after Trump encouraged New Yorkers to cast their votes for Republican Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral election and threatened to withhold funding from the city if Mamdani won.
During his victory speech, Mamdani boldly addressed Trump, urging him to “turn the volume up” and asserting his commitment to ending the “culture of corruption that made him possible.”
Sir Sadiq has had a longstanding contentious relationship with the U.S. President. In 2019, Trump labeled him a “stone-cold loser,” to which Sir Sadiq responded by accusing Trump of inciting far-right rhetoric.
More recently, Trump criticized Sir Sadiq as a “terrible, terrible mayor,” prompting Sir Sadiq to label Trump as “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.”
In an interview with BBC London, he commented, “People are curious why this Muslim mayor, who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive, and successful city, seems to occupy such a prominent space in Donald Trump’s mind.”
As mayor of London, Sir Sadiq had the chance to meet then-Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, during a 2022 visit to the U.S., where Adams praised him as a “rockstar mayor.”
