FSB Operatives Neutralize Suspected Bomber in Kaluga Region Shootout

On Thursday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that its officers shot and killed a man who opened fire on them while they were attempting to apprehend him in connection with suspected bomb attack plans in the Kaluga region.

The FSB stated that the individual, a 49-year-old whose name was not disclosed, fired at the officers during their attempt to arrest him and was subsequently killed in the exchange. They also mentioned that he hailed from the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine.

State media released video footage showing the aftermath of the shooting, with a body found in a snowy forested area, along with what the FSB described as a bag filled with explosives.

According to the FSB, the man was allegedly following instructions from Ukraine, preparing explosives and incendiary devices totaling up to 80 kilograms (176 pounds) for potential bombings.

The agency further asserted that Ukrainian intelligence had supplied him with 300 grams (10.5 ounces) of “foreign-made” plastic explosives, two electric detonators, a pistol, and ammunition.

The FSB claimed that the individual intended to detonate explosives at a gas storage site and the parking lot of a defense contractor, although specific targets were not named.

Authorities are investigating the incident as an attempted terrorist act.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, FSB officers have reportedly killed at least 74 individuals during arrest attempts, according to a count by the investigative organization IStories.
