A French cyclist detained while attempting to enter Russia’s Far East will remain in custody until at least October, according to reports from Russian state media that referenced a local court.
As per French news sources, Sofiane Sehili was apprehended after he illegally crossed the border from China into Russia while striving to set a record for the fastest endurance bike ride from Lisbon to Vladivostok.
The RIA Novosti news agency indicated that a court in Primorye region had decided to keep him in pre-trial detention until October 4. The court’s press service did not specify the nature of the charges against Sehili.
State media mentioned that the court hearing occurred earlier in September.
A representative from a government-associated prison oversight group, who spoke with Sehili during his detention, informed AFP that the cyclist possessed a Russian e-visa but “attempted to enter the country on foot at a checkpoint reserved for Russian and Chinese nationals.”
“He then proceeded to another crossing where cycling is not permitted; entry there requires travel by train or bus,” stated Vladimir Naidin, who is part of the public monitoring commission of the Primorye region, in a phone call with AFP.
Naidin reported that while Sehili was in good health, he faced difficulties in communicating with prison officials due to the language barrier. At the moment, he is sharing a cell with another inmate.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring he receives the same treatment as any Russian citizen,” Naidin added.
