Russian and American top diplomats engaged in a “candid discussion” during their meeting in Malaysia on Thursday, according to Russian officials. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, had introduced a “new idea” regarding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
The talks were held on the fringes of the ASEAN foreign ministers’ summit in Kuala Lumpur, shortly after Russia launched a second night of attacks on Kyiv, which resulted in two fatalities.
Despite the ongoing strikes, Moscow asserted that peace talks with Kyiv have not hit a dead end.
“An in-depth and honest exchange of opinions took place concerning the situation in Ukraine,” stated Russia’s Foreign Ministry following the discussions.
Rubio informed the press that Lavrov had proposed something “novel” in relation to the ongoing conflict, although he refrained from providing specifics.
“It’s not a new strategy; it’s a new idea or concept that I will bring back to the president for discussion,” he noted. Rubio also mentioned that it was not a proposal that **“automatically paves the way for peace, but it might open a door to a possible solution.”**
Moscow did not comment on the specifics of the idea presented.
Rubio further indicated that he communicated Trump’s displeasure regarding the ongoing war, which has now entered its fourth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
“I reiterated the president’s sentiments, expressing both disappointment and frustration at the stagnation in progress,” Rubio remarked.
Earlier this week, Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his statements about peace negotiations concerning Ukraine, asserting the need to send more American weaponry to Kyiv.
As the U.S. president has increasingly scrutinized Putin, he has also expressed dissatisfaction with Kyiv, especially as hopes for a swift resolution to Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II continue to fade.
Rubio and Lavrov had last met in February in Saudi Arabia while the Trump administration sought to improve relations with Moscow and to initiate peace discussions surrounding the Ukraine war. The two diplomats have also held multiple phone conversations in recent months.
Following the summit in Malaysia, Lavrov is expected to visit North Korea this weekend, continuing a series of significant visits aimed at bolstering military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
