Naval Drone Assault Disrupts Operations at Major Russian Oil Terminal

A key oil terminal in Russia, located near the southern port of Novorossiysk, suspended its operations early Saturday due to a naval drone strike that inflicted damage on one of its three mooring points.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), the operator of the terminal, announced that it would restart operations once the threat from drones has been eliminated.

The consortium did not specify who was behind the attack. Ukraine, which frequently targets Russian energy infrastructure to undermine the nation’s war resources, has not yet responded to the incident.

The CPC pipeline, which runs from Kazakhstan to this terminal, is a crucial route for Kazakh oil and ranks among the largest pipelines globally, responsible for about 1% of the world’s oil supply.

“The recent targeted drone attack at 4:06 a.m. Moscow time caused considerable damage to Mooring Point 2 (SMP-2),” the CPC stated on Telegram.

“It is no longer feasible to operate SMP-2. Loading at the terminal will resume under established protocols once the drone threat has been resolved,” the statement further noted.

According to the Caspian Policy Center based in the U.S., the CPC pipeline is responsible for approximately 80% of Kazakhstan’s oil exports.
