Cycling activity in London has surged by over 50% in the last two years, based on official statistics.

In October 2024, a record-breaking daily count of 139,000 cyclists was recorded at 30 different sites, a notable rise from 89,000 in 2022.

The City of London Corporation announced that this increase is the most significant rise since data tracking began in 1999.

Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the uptick in cycling within the Square Mile.

Current data from the corporation shows that cyclists now represent 56% of all traffic during peak commuting times.

Additionally, dockless bicycles have come to constitute one in every six bikes found on the streets of the City.

These shifts in transportation patterns have led the City of London Corporation to meet three significant targets six years ahead of schedule.

Since 2017, cycling rates have risen by 70%, exceeding the goal of a 50% increase by 2030.

In parallel, motor vehicle traffic has decreased by 34%, surpassing the 25% reduction target for 2030. Freight traffic has also fallen by 21%, outpacing the 15% goal set for that year.

Shravan Joshi, the chairman of the planning and transportation committee at the corporation, noted improvements in air quality.

“When we originally released our strategy in 2019, we had 15 sites across the City that surpassed our air quality standards for harmful nitrogen dioxide,” he remarked. “As of last year, that number has dropped to just two.”
