Russian Authorities Issue Arrest Warrant for Exiled Rapper Face Amid Controversy

The Interior Ministry of Russia has issued a warrant for the arrest of the rapper Face, according to a report by the exiled news outlet Mediazona on Friday.

Authorities have not revealed the specific charges against the 27-year-old artist, whose birth name is Ivan Dremin. He was designated as a “foreign agent” in 2022, and since then, he has faced multiple fines for not adhering to the restrictions associated with that label.

Face departed Russia shortly after the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. At that time, he declared that he would cease performing in Russia and would remove his music from the country’s streaming services.

The rapper gained popularity in 2017 with his viral music video “Burger,” which has received over 30 million views on YouTube. His 2018 album, “Mysterious Ways,” represented a turn towards politically engaged topics, addressing issues like poverty, corruption, and the mistreatment within Russia’s prison system.

Face had publicly supported the late opposition activist Alexei Navalny, participating in several protests in favor of the anti-Kremlin leader.

His most recent album, titled “God of Rap,” was released in June 2024.
