Iron Maiden Celebrates 50 Years with Striking Commemorative Coin from Royal Mint

Legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden has been honored with a special UK coin to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Created by artist Albert “Akirant” Quirantes, the coin showcases the iconic mascot Eddie and includes concealed elements referencing the band’s history, albums, and tours.

Band manager Rod Smallwood shared, “Featuring Eddie on an official UK coin continues his remarkable journey that began when we first brought him to life in 1980. We’ve seen him on stamps, beer bottles, airplane tails, and now, as legal tender.”

Rebecca Morgan from The Royal Mint, located in Llantrisant, South Wales, referred to the coin as a “remarkable fusion of metal on metal,” expressing anticipation that it will be a highly coveted collector’s item.

The official site of Iron Maiden portrays Eddie as “a ghastly yet undeniably striking and enigmatic character whose captivating likeness appears on every album and many t-shirts.”

In 2023, he was also featured on a collection of commemorative stamps released by Royal Mail.

This coin marks the first officially licensed collectible featuring the band’s 50th anniversary emblem.

Quirantes expressed that creating the coin was “one of the most exciting projects” in his career. He noted, “As a lifelong admirer of the band and Derek Riggs’ original artworks from the ’80s, I aimed to encapsulate not only their iconic visuals but also the rebellious essence that has characterized their music for many years.”

He added, “I’ve incorporated various hidden elements in the design that dedicated fans will be thrilled to uncover, including subtle references to classic album covers and their most cherished songs.”

The coin is available in multiple editions, starting at £18.50.
