Zelensky to Discuss Peace Efforts with Trump in Washington on Monday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to travel to Washington on Monday to engage in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump about “putting an end to the violence and the ongoing conflict,” as he announced on Saturday.

Zelensky made this statement following a phone conversation with Trump, during which the U.S. president shared the “key points” of his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

“On Monday, I will meet President Trump in Washington, D.C., to go over all the details concerning the cessation of violence and the war,” Zelensky stated. “I appreciate the invitation.”

He mentioned that he had a “lengthy and meaningful dialogue with Trump,” which started as a private conversation before European leaders joined in.

This meeting in Washington is scheduled just three days after Trump’s discussions with Putin in Alaska, which concluded without any announcement of a ceasefire or a significant breakthrough to resolve Russia’s invasion that has persisted for over three years.

The day following the U.S.-Russia summit, Zelensky urged Kyiv’s European partners to be involved at “every stage” of the negotiations.

He also emphasized his willingness for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin—an arrangement that Ukraine has advocated for, but which has faced resistance from the Kremlin.

“Ukraine asserts that important matters can be tackled at the leaders’ level, and a trilateral format is appropriate for these discussions,” Zelensky remarked.

Russian Drone Strike on Kyiv Kills One, Several Wounded – City Officials Текст: A Russian drone attack targeted the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of Saturday, killing one person and wounding seven, authorities in Kyiv said. Loud explosions were heard in the city around midnight, according to AFP journalists, and air defense forces were responding, officials said. Enemy drones are over the city, with air defense responding. There are multiple targets on the capitals outskirts, Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyivs military administration, said on Telegram. Currently, in Kyiv, there is a total of one dead and seven injured, including one child, Tkachenko later posted. He said the fatality was a man. Mayor Vitaly Klitschko warned people to remain in shelters during the attack. Residential buildings in several districts and cars were damaged, he said. There are currently seven injured in the capital. Four of them have been hospitalized by medics, Klitschko said, also on Telegram. Earlier, he posted that a 13-year-old child was among the wounded. Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the Kyiv region, said two women were wounded in the town of Brovary. The enemy is heavily attacking the Kyiv region with missiles and drones. Residential areas and people’s homes are under attack, Kalashnyk said. Earlier this week, Russian drones and missiles rained down on Kyiv during the night, setting fires in apartment buildings. City officials said seven people were killed. The strikes come amid a diplomatic push based on a U.S. plan to end the conflict that Kyiv fears will hand big concessions to Moscow. Ukrainian negotiators are expected in the U.S. this weekend for talks on the plan, a senior official briefed on the matter told AFP. Washingtons original proposal — drafted without input from Ukraines European allies — would have seen Kyiv withdraw from its eastern Donetsk region and the U.S. de facto recognize Donetsk, Crimea and Luhansk regions as Russian. The U.S. pared back the initial draft following criticism from Kyiv and Europe, but the current contents remain unclear.

Ukrainian Delegation Heads to U.S. for Peace Talks Текст: Ukrainian negotiators are due to hold talks in the United States on Sunday to discuss the Trump administrations plan to end the war with Russia, with Kyiv facing pressure on both the military and political fronts. As Russia advances on the front line, its forces targeted Ukraines capital and the region for two nights in a row ahead of the talks in the United States. A drone attack on the outskirts of Kyiv killed one person and wounded 11 on Saturday night, the regional governor said. Hours earlier, a Ukrainian security source said Kyiv was responsible for attacks on two oil tankers in the Black Sea that it believed were covertly transporting sanctioned Russian oil. The U.S. talks come at a moment of turmoil for President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government. A major corruption investigation prompted him on Friday to dismiss his chief of staff and top negotiator, Andriy Yermak. The Ukraine team, now led by Rustem Umerov, is due to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff in Florida on Sunday, a U.S. official said. Washington has put forward a plan to end the war and is seeking to finalize it with Moscow and Kyiv. An initial 28-point draft — prepared without input from Ukraine’s European partners — envisioned a Ukrainian withdrawal from the eastern Donetsk region and saw the United States effectively recognizing the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, as well as annexed Crimea, as Russian. The United States revised the proposal after criticism from Kyiv and European capitals, though its current terms remain unclear.
