Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to travel to Washington on Monday to engage in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump about “putting an end to the violence and the ongoing conflict,” as he announced on Saturday.
Zelensky made this statement following a phone conversation with Trump, during which the U.S. president shared the “key points” of his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
“On Monday, I will meet President Trump in Washington, D.C., to go over all the details concerning the cessation of violence and the war,” Zelensky stated. “I appreciate the invitation.”
He mentioned that he had a “lengthy and meaningful dialogue with Trump,” which started as a private conversation before European leaders joined in.
This meeting in Washington is scheduled just three days after Trump’s discussions with Putin in Alaska, which concluded without any announcement of a ceasefire or a significant breakthrough to resolve Russia’s invasion that has persisted for over three years.
The day following the U.S.-Russia summit, Zelensky urged Kyiv’s European partners to be involved at “every stage” of the negotiations.
He also emphasized his willingness for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin—an arrangement that Ukraine has advocated for, but which has faced resistance from the Kremlin.
“Ukraine asserts that important matters can be tackled at the leaders’ level, and a trilateral format is appropriate for these discussions,” Zelensky remarked.
