At least 14 individuals, including a child, sustained injuries following a Ukrainian drone strike in Chuvashia, a republic within Russia, early Tuesday morning, according to local health officials.
The Health Ministry of Chuvashia reported that the injured are currently receiving medical treatment, while emergency responders work to manage the consequences of the attack.
Governor Oleg Nikolayev noted that the strike caused damage to residential buildings and led to temporary traffic restrictions on several major routes in Cheboksary, the capital of the region.
Despite Nikolayev’s appeals to refrain from sharing images and videos of the incident, independent media outlets circulated eyewitness footage capturing the moment when at least one drone struck near both a parking area and residential structures. One image depicted individuals lying on the sidewalk near the impact site.
According to the Astra Telegram channel, which cited accounts from a witness and a user in a local chat group, there were reports of two fatalities resulting from the attack. However, The Moscow Times has not been able to independently confirm this information.
Prime Minister Oleg Artamonov of Chuvashia announced that a state of emergency has been declared across the region to mobilize all necessary resources to tackle the aftermath of the strike.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defense systems intercepted or shot down 121 Ukrainian drones across 11 regions of Russia, as well as over the annexed Crimea and the Caspian Sea during the night.
However, no reports indicated that any drones were brought down in Chuvashia.
