Two Years On: Grieving Parents Demand Accountability After Tragic School Crash Claims Lives of Young Girls

The parents of two eight-year-old girls who lost their lives in a tragic incident at a London school due to a car crash are still seeking clarity even two years after the event.

Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau were killed when a Land Rover drove into a tea party celebrating the end of term at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon on July 6, 2023.

At a memorial gathering held on Sunday, Nuria’s mother, Smera Chohan, expressed, “We’ve had to fight tirelessly—more than any victim should ever have to endure—but we are determined to uncover the truth surrounding this tragedy.”

The gathering on Wimbledon Common, close to the school, marked the second anniversary of the girls’ tragic deaths.

Last year, the car’s driver, Claire Freemantle, aged 48, stated she had “no memory of the events that unfolded.” She also extended her “deepest condolences to the families who have endured such horrific loss and suffering.”

After the crash, Ms. Freemantle was detained at the scene; however, in June of last year, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that no charges would be brought against her. They indicated that she had experienced an epileptic seizure while driving, which resulted in her losing control of the vehicle that struck the school. They further noted that there was no prior indication of seizure activity in her medical history.

In January, however, she was re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a review of the investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford stated, “Our primary focus is to ensure that the newly identified lines of inquiry are thoroughly pursued. I urge the public to refrain from speculation.”

In the wake of this development, the girls’ parents expressed appreciation for the renewed investigation, emphasizing the necessity of pursuing the truth and obtaining all the facts.

During Sunday’s memorial, they voiced their frustration over the prolonged wait for answers and expressed a desire for accountability.

Hundreds from the local community gathered with Ms. Chohan, Nuria’s father Sajjad Butt, along with Selena’s parents, Franky Lau and Jessie Deng, to honor the girls’ memory.

Members of the emergency services were also present for a moment of reflection and commemoration.

Two benches dedicated to the girls were decorated with floral tributes and personal messages.

Following a two-minute silence—one minute represented for each girl—Ms. Chohan gave an impassioned speech.

“We are still searching for answers regarding that tragic day… With all of your support, we will persist in our pursuit until we receive the answers we are entitled to.”

She continued, “Our lives will never be the same… We were parents. I often struggle with my identity as a mother, and I need to understand why I’m no longer a mother, as Nuria deserved a comprehensive investigation.”

Mr. Lau added, “We are still waiting; we seek a coherent account of what transpired.”
