Trumps Take on Crimea Aligns with Kremlins Longstanding Position

The Kremlin stated on Thursday that it supports U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that Ukraine effectively “lost” Crimea some time ago.

On Wednesday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the Black Sea peninsula, annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, was “not even a topic of discussion” and had been “lost years ago.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to inquiries about Trump’s comments, saying, “This aligns completely with our perspective, which we have maintained for a significant period.”

The Trump administration had earlier considered the possibility of acknowledging Russian control over Crimea as part of a potential peace agreement to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

Kyiv has consistently stated that it will never accept Russian dominance over Crimea in any peace negotiations.

Since launching its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has taken control of approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory and claims four additional regions in addition to Crimea.
