A care home in East London has been experimenting with innovative technologies such as robotic pets and Amazon Alexa devices to enhance the lives of its residents living with dementia.
Kallar Lodge, located on Gregory Road in Marks Gate, stands as the last council-operated care home in Barking and Dagenham.
As part of the integrated care service for Adults Care and Support, Kallar Lodge currently accommodates 43 residents who are over 65 and diagnosed with dementia.
Since the launch of Barking and Dagenham Council’s advanced care technology initiative in collaboration with Alcove in September 2023, Kallar Lodge has begun implementing various devices to aid its residents.
The introduction of robotic dogs and cats has been particularly beneficial in alleviating the anxiety of residents, with even non-verbal individuals and those with dysphasia engaging with these animals and forming emotional bonds.
Staff members report that these robotic pets, which imitate the sounds and behaviors of real dogs and cats, have served as effective distractions, enabling residents to remain engaged for extended periods while visibly uplifting their moods.
Furthermore, digital translation tools have significantly enhanced the lives of residents who do not speak English, helping to alleviate feelings of social isolation and foster better connections with staff members.
Manager Pauline Humphrey emphasized that these translators have bolstered residents’ self-esteem and interaction levels.
She noted: “Many individuals with dementia may revert to their first language as they lose their grasp on English, making it challenging to comprehend their needs and leading to feelings of isolation.
“The translator is also beneficial during group activities, as it enables residents to understand the questions posed and actively participate, enhancing communication among individuals.”
