Tram Services Halted in Croydon as Critical Maintenance Kicks Off, Alternative Transport Arrangements in Place

Tram services in Croydon have been suspended temporarily between several stops due to essential maintenance, which could lead to transportation challenges in south London.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, significant work is being conducted at the Shirley Hills Road crossing, affecting the route between Coombe Lane and Gravel Hill tram stops.

Transport for London (TfL) has indicated that the maintenance is projected to take two weeks, concluding on April 18, with services set to recommence the following day.

During this period, trams will not operate between the Sandilands and New Addington tram stops, which includes Lloyd Park, Coombe Lane, Gravel Hill, Addington Village, Fieldway, King Henry’s Drive, and New Addington.

TfL has assured that its engineering teams will strive to reduce disruptions as much as possible, and trams will continue to function normally between Wimbledon and Elmers End or Beckenham Junction.

A substitute bus service is being provided between the New Addington and East Croydon tram stops; however, due to the ongoing closure of Coombe Lane and Gravel Hill, the Lloyd Park tram stop will not be serviced.

Additionally, TfL noted that crucial maintenance on the New Addington route will occur simultaneously, including the resurfacing of parts of the roadway, track upkeep in the Sandilands Tunnel, improvements at the King Henry’s Drive roundabout, and repairs at the crossing for the Lloyd Park tram stop.

Navid Golshan, TfL’s general manager for London Trams, emphasized the importance of this work for ensuring a safe and dependable service.

“This closure provides us with the chance to carry out additional necessary tasks, with the goal of reducing future interruptions,” he stated.

He also expressed gratitude to passengers for their understanding during this time and urged travelers to plan their journeys in advance, allowing ample time for any travel needs.
