A man has been fatally shot, and a woman has been hospitalized following what authorities have called a “highly distressing event” in a park located in north London.
Emergency services were summoned around 7:00 PM BST on Wednesday to Clissold Park in Stoke Newington, where they discovered the two individuals, both in their 40s, suffering from gunshot injuries.
The man was declared dead after being taken to the hospital, while the woman’s condition remains unclear as she continues to receive care.
Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter stated, “We are in the preliminary phases of our inquiry, but we believe that the man and woman were acquainted. Currently, we are treating this as an isolated incident, and there is no broader threat to the community.”
He further commented, “We recognize that this is a profoundly troubling situation for those involved, as well as for witnesses in the park and residents in the surrounding community.”
A firearm has been secured, and a crime scene has been established.
Authorities are currently attempting to reach out to the families of the individuals involved.
Hackney Council announced that Clissold Park would remain closed on Thursday morning and that they are “aiding the police in their investigation.”
