Tragic Misjudgment: Doctor Fatally Struck by Van in Hospital Car Park, Driver Denies Careless Driving

A delivery driver, failing to adequately check his blind spot, fatally struck a doctor in the parking lot of her workplace, as revealed during proceedings at the Old Bailey.

Dr. Anjum Afshan, aged 62, was on her way to board a bus after finishing her shift when Gulamo Remtula reversed his van out of an entrance near Clayponds Rehabilitation Hospital in Ealing, west London, according to the court testimony.

One of her coworkers, who witnessed the tragic event, hurried into the hospital for assistance. Tragically, Dr. Afshan was pronounced dead approximately an hour later.

Remtula, 58, from Harrow in west London, contests the charge of causing death by driving without due care.

The court heard that Dr. Afshan was struck from behind and propelled forward by the collision, while the van continued its backward motion, ultimately pinning her beneath the rear axle.

Family members of Dr. Afshan exited the courtroom as surveillance footage of the incident was presented to the jury.

Prosecutor Frederick Hookway noted that Remtula was operating a Mercedes Sprinter van equipped with a box trailer. Importantly, the prosecutor pointed out that the vehicle lacked a functioning reversing alarm.

Hookway urged the jury to conclude that Remtula’s driving was careless, stating, “The defendant reversed through a car park without performing sufficient checks of his blind spot, demonstrating inattentiveness before proceeding to reverse.”

He further emphasized, “The key issue for your consideration, as you deliberate on your verdict, will be how you assess the standard of the defendant’s driving and its role in this incident.”

A post-mortem examination determined that Dr. Afshan died from a crush injury to her chest and traumatic asphyxia.
