A woman residing near the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region of southwestern Russia passed away in the hospital a day after sustaining injuries from a Ukrainian drone strike, regional officials reported on Tuesday.

Acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein disclosed late Monday that the 48-year-old woman was milking a cow in the village of Goncharovka when she was hit by shrapnel and subsequently admitted to the hospital in critical condition. He did not clarify whether the drone had been disabled by Russian air defense systems prior to the attack.

Goncharovka is located 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, and it serves as a suburb of the city of Sudzha.

Khinshtein stated that the woman died from her injuries at the Kursk Regional Hospital later that night. “The medical staff exerted every effort, but the injuries proved to be too severe,” he wrote on Telegram.

Since President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine over three years ago, cross-border assaults in areas bordering both Russia and Ukraine have resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.

Authorities indicate that more than 600 Russian civilians have died due to Ukrainian strikes across Russia and annexed Crimea since February 2022. Khinshtein noted in late April that nearly half of those casualties occurred during Ukraine’s nine-month partial occupation of the Kursk region, following Moscow’s announcement of the region’s complete liberation from Ukrainian forces.
