Su-34 Fighter-Bomber Experiences Malfunction and Crashes in Nizhny Novgorod Region During Training Exercise

A Russian Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber went down during a training exercise in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as reported by the Interfax news agency on Tuesday, referencing information from the Defense Ministry.

The aircraft reportedly suffered a mechanical problem related to its landing gear. Despite the two pilots’ efforts to address the issue mid-flight, they were ultimately compelled to abandon the aircraft and eject, according to Interfax.

Fortunately, both pilots survived the incident, and there was no reported damage on the ground.

The Su-34, which is extensively employed by Russian military forces in Ukraine and has an estimated price tag of just under $15 million, crashed at around 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday in a remote area.

The location of the crash is approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of Moscow, according to the Telegram news channel Baza, which is connected to Russian security agencies.

The Defense Ministry indicated that a rescue team successfully reached the crash site and evacuated the crew; however, Baza reported that as of Tuesday afternoon, only one pilot had been located.

This incident marks at least the third occurrence of a Su-34 crash in just over a year, following a fatal training mishap in North Ossetia last June and another crash in the Volgograd region in July, where both pilots managed to eject safely, according to the exiled news organization Meduza.
