Sir Sadiq Khan Hits Back: Trump’s Rhetoric is a Reflection of His Own Biases

Sir Sadiq Khan has stated that Donald Trump has demonstrated tendencies that are “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic” following the president’s remarks about him at the United Nations.

During his address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump referred to London’s mayor as having “a terrible, terrible record” and suggested significant changes have occurred in the city.

He further remarked, “They now want to adopt Sharia law.”

In an interview with BBC London, Sir Sadiq expressed that many are curious about why a Muslim mayor, who oversees a liberal, multicultural, progressive, and thriving city, seems to occupy a significant space in Donald Trump’s thoughts.

He asserted, “I believe President Trump reveals himself to be racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.”

“When individuals express certain sentiments or exhibit particular behaviors, we must take them at their word,” he emphasized.

In response to Trump’s assertion about him being a “terrible mayor,” Sir Sadiq pointed out his gratitude for the large influx of Americans visiting London.

He noted that various metrics often rank London as the foremost city globally in terms of cultural significance.

The White House has been contacted for a statement on the matter.

On Wednesday, Cabinet minister Pat McFadden came to Sir Sadiq’s defense, commenting on their ongoing dispute and dismissing Trump’s claim concerning London moving towards Sharia law.

He affirmed that British law and “no other legal codes” are applicable in the UK.

Earlier this month, justice minister Sarah Sackman informed the House of Commons that Sharia law is not integrated into the legal framework of England and Wales.

Although religious courts, including Sharia councils, operate in the UK, their primary focus is on religious marriage arbitration and financial issues, with the government clarifying that their decisions are not legally enforceable.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, remarked that with President Trump, one should “never interpret his words literally, ever, on any subject, but always consider his comments seriously.”

Participating in an LBC phone-in, he stated, “Is he correct in asserting that Sharia is a concern in London? Yes.

“Is it a predominant issue right now? No.

“Has the mayor of London made a direct connection to it? No.”

He added, “I believe Trump was attempting to convey a broader concern that the West risks losing its culture, heritage, and identity.”

Sackman had previously remarked in Parliament that when individuals choose to engage with such councils, akin to Christian, Jewish, and other faith-based courts, it exemplifies the religious tolerance that is a cherished British principle.

The Church of England’s ecclesiastical courts oversee certain aspects of church property and clergy misconduct, while Jewish religious tribunals, known as Beth Din, serve as voluntary means for resolving disputes based on Jewish law. The Roman Catholic Church also has tribunals addressing spiritual matters and marriage annulments.

This is not the inaugural occasion where the U.S. president has criticized Sir Sadiq.

In 2019, he labeled London’s mayor, who secured a third term in 2024, as a “stone-cold loser.”

Previously, Trump has challenged Sir Sadiq to take an IQ test and criticized his handling of the London Bridge attack in 2017.

During a visit to Scotland in July, the president described Sir Sadiq as “a nasty person” who had “performed poorly.”

At that time, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer intervened when Trump condemned Sir Sadiq, stating, “He’s a friend of mine, actually.”
