Russian Strikes Leave Odesa Region in the Dark Amid Winter Preparations

An overnight assault by Russia resulted in power outages in certain areas of Ukraine’s southern Odesa region early Saturday, marking the most recent attack aimed at disrupting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches, according to authorities.

While officials did not disclose the number of individuals impacted by the latest power cuts, DTEK, a Ukrainian energy company, indicated that there were outages in parts of the regional capital. The company later announced it had restored electricity to over 240,000 homes in the area.

“Last night, the aggressor targeted energy and civilian infrastructure in the Odesa region,” stated regional governor Oleh Kiper via Telegram.

He added, “Power engineers are working diligently to completely restore the electricity supply.”

Since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has consistently attacked the nation’s energy network each winter, depriving millions of households of power and heating, and disrupting water supplies in what Kyiv characterizes as outright war crimes.

Russia refutes claims of targeting civilians, asserting that Ukraine utilizes energy facilities to support its military efforts. In contrast, Ukrainian officials maintain that the strikes are mainly directed at civilian populations.

The outages on Saturday followed a significant Russian strike on Friday, which cut power to large areas of Kyiv and nine other regions.

DTEK reported early Saturday that it had restored electricity to over 800,000 homes in the capital following that attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Friday’s Russian attacks as a “record for villainy” and urged Western nations to impose tighter sanctions on Moscow.
