Russian Soldier Charged with Murder and Child Abduction in Troubling Border Incident

A Russian soldier was taken into custody after allegedly murdering a woman, seriously wounding her husband, and attempting to kidnap their two daughters in a village adjacent to the Ukrainian border, according to reports from Russian media on Monday.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Dmitry Stenkin, was placed in pre-trial detention last Friday, as reported by the news outlets Mediazona and Astra, who referenced a military court’s press service. The exact charges against him have not been made public.

It is reported that Stenkin forced his way into the residence of Olesya Larina in the village of Gir’i, located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the border, late last Tuesday, where he fatally assaulted her. Media reports indicate that Larina’s husband suffered gunshot injuries to his arm and chin and is currently in a medically induced coma.

A neighbor, Alexander Zuyev, stated that he observed Stenkin attempting to abduct the Larins’ daughters, ages six and ten, before he was apprehended by security personnel at a nearby vocational school that housed army medics. Zuyev noted that Stenkin seemed to be under the influence of drugs at the time of his capture.

An image shared by the Larins’ 18-year-old son, Ilya, who resides in Kursk, depicted what appeared to be a bloodied Stenkin in military attire with his hands restrained behind his back.

Astra reported that Stenkin has a history of multiple felony convictions dating back to 2017 and may have joined the military from prison sometime after January 2025.

Russian authorities have not publicly addressed the reported murder of Larina.

Acting Governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, had previously advised residents to refrain from returning to towns and villages near the border due to ongoing safety concerns.
