Russian Assaults Leave One Dead and Damage Religious Sites in Ukraine

Overnight Russian assaults into the early hours of Thursday resulted in the death of a rescue worker in Ukraine, disrupted train operations, and caused damage to a synagogue, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Reporters from AFP in Kyiv reported hearing air raid sirens and explosions throughout the night, coinciding with the launch of 130 drones by Russia, as per the Ukrainian air force’s statement.

Emergency services confirmed that one rescue worker lost their life, and five others sustained injuries while battling a fire during an additional Russian strike on the village of Zelenyi Hai in the eastern Kharkiv region.

“This is yet another crime against our rescue teams,” a social media statement lamented.

In Kyiv, officials reported that eight individuals were injured, while the foreign ministry disclosed that a synagogue was damaged amid the strikes affecting three areas of the city.

“Russian terror indiscriminately targets all, including religious communities,” the foreign ministry remarked.

The statement also noted that since the outset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, 640 places of worship and 67 religious leaders have lost their lives.

AFP journalists in Kyiv observed residential buildings with shattered windows and the charred remains of vehicles as locals started clearing debris.

In the eastern Sumy region, authorities reported injuries to two railway workers, with the state railway operator indicating that services were disrupted in the border area.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 139 Ukrainian drones during the night, primarily over western regions near the Ukrainian border.

This exchange of fire occurred just a day after Russian bombardments resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including two children, and prompted widespread power outages throughout Ukraine.
