On Wednesday, Moscow announced its readiness to do “everything” possible to help achieve a diplomatic resolution regarding the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran related to Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Since the onset of its extensive military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia, which possesses the largest confirmed nuclear arsenal in the world, has bolstered its military cooperation with Iran.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated to reporters, “The Russian Federation is willing to do all it can to assist in resolving this situation through political and diplomatic channels.”
Peskov’s remarks followed an Iranian parliament member’s suggestion in an interview with state-owned news agency RIA Novosti that both Russia and China might act as joint guarantors for any future agreements between Iran and the U.S.
In recent weeks, Russia has made several calls for de-escalation after former U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to issue threats of military action against Iran should it decline to negotiate restrictions on its nuclear program.
Though Peskov did not specify whether Moscow would take on the role of guarantor, he indicated that the Kremlin is “hoping” for a new round of negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Last week, Iranian and U.S. officials engaged in indirect discussions in Oman, marking their most significant interaction since Trump withdrew from the landmark nuclear agreement in 2018.
