Russia Frees Greek Oil Tanker Amid Tensions in the Baltic Sea

On Sunday, Russia released an oil tanker owned by Greece that had been seized in its territorial waters, according to a report from Estonian public broadcaster ERR on Tuesday.

The tanker, named Green Admire and registered under the flag of Liberia, was observed departing from the Gulf of Finland and entering the Baltic Sea, with its destination set for Rotterdam in the Netherlands, as indicated by analysis of ship tracking data from LSEG by Reuters.

The vessel had departed from Sillamae port in Estonia through a navigation channel that intersects Russian territorial waters, after which it was apprehended, as stated by the Estonian Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

Estonia’s foreign minister noted that Russia’s actions regarding the Green Admire were likely a reaction to the Estonian navy’s efforts to inspect tankers involved in transporting millions of barrels of Russian oil across the Baltic Sea.
