On Thursday, Russia expressed concerns that recent U.S. sanctions targeting its oil sector could jeopardize diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, asserting that it had cultivated a robust resilience against such measures.
U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled new sanctions on Russia’s two leading oil corporations on Wednesday, expressing frustration that his negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin were not progressing.
After delaying the implementation of additional sanctions for several months, Trump’s decision came following the collapse of plans for a new summit with Putin in Budapest.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, characterized the sanctions as fundamentally counterproductive, particularly in light of the need for a substantive negotiated resolution to the situation in Ukraine, during a routine press briefing.
She further noted, “Our nation has built strong resilience to Western sanctions and will steadfastly continue to enhance its economic capabilities, including in the energy sector.”
