On Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced the closure of Poland’s last diplomatic office outside Moscow, specifically the Polish consulate located in Irkutsk, as a response to Poland’s recent closure of one of its consulates.

Last week, Polish officials accused Russian security agents of executing two sabotage attacks on Poland’s railway infrastructure and subsequently ordered the closure of the consulate in Gdansk. In reaction, Moscow condemned this action and promised to take reciprocal steps.

This counteraction unfolded on Thursday when the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Polish ambassador, Krzysztof Krajewski, to formally convey the decision regarding the consulate’s closure. The ministry described Poland’s actions as “an overtly hostile and unjustifiable move,” confirming that the consulate in Irkutsk would be shut down by December 30.

These reciprocal consulate closures leave each country with only one diplomatic mission in the other’s territory, both situated in their respective capitals.

Poland had been the sole EU nation to operate a consulate in Irkutsk, a city close to Mongolia, which historically served to assist the descendants of Poles exiled to Siberia during the regime of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Previously, Poland had closed Russian consulates in Poznan and Krakow, while Moscow had also terminated Polish diplomatic missions in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
