Running in Style: Traffic Cone Clad Marathoner Aims for World Record While Raising Awareness for Prostate Cancer

A dedicated runner is planning to set a new record for the quickest time to complete the London Marathon while donning a traffic cone costume.

Michael Wiggins, hailing from Streatham in southwest London, will participate in his 18th London Marathon since 1999, marking his debut in a costume modeled after a traffic cone as he attempts to claim the Guinness World Record.

Wiggins aims to surpass the existing record of three hours and 22 minutes while also fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK.

He expressed his surprise after learning that three friends had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and hopes that his endeavor will inspire more men to engage in discussions about their health issues.

“I have three close friends, all in their early sixties, who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer over the past five years,” the 47-year-old shared. “Even though they are a decade or so older than I am, it still took me by surprise.”

Wiggins hopes to raise over £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, which funds research into a condition that affects one in every eight men. “If it can save just one life, then it’s absolutely worth it,” he expressed.

He added that the color scheme of his costume matches that of the Clapham Pioneers, the running club he serves as race secretary for, and he has practiced running in the outfit in preparation for the marathon taking place on April 27.

“People have mistaken me for a carrot or a rocket, but I’m definitely an orange traffic cone,” he remarked.

Wiggins noted that the base of his costume is “quite broad,” and he plans to “navigate carefully” to avoid colliding with fellow participants. “I can definitely expect to bump into a few people,” he admitted.

Joining him will be 260 other runners at the London Marathon, all supporting Prostate Cancer UK, which aims to raise over £720,000.

The charity is backing Wiggins’ efforts and is encouraging men to utilize its online risk assessment tool, which takes just 30 seconds to evaluate their likelihood of developing the disease.
