The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) is set to establish a new campus in east London, promising “limitless opportunities” for its students.
Located within the London City Island development in Docklands, the new site will feature four spacious studios, ten instructional and practice rooms, as well as a grand piano and integrated recording studios.
While RAM will maintain its primary operations at its current location on Marylebone Road in central London for most of its instructional, practice, and rehearsal activities, along with all public performances.
RAM’s principal, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, remarked, “This new acquisition marks a pivotal moment for the Royal Academy of Music and is essential for our future as we elevate our already exceptional facilities to an even greater level and to a new location.”
Construction at London City Island is anticipated to commence in the spring of 2026, following the completion of design work this autumn.
The academy believes that the 22-minute commute from its main campus will offer students expanded opportunities and ease the strain on the central building.
Furthermore, it emphasized that there are “no intentions to increase student enrollment. These new facilities are solely aimed at enhancing the student experience.”
The new building will be located near the headquarters of the English National Ballet and will be designed by AOC Architecture, whose recent projects include the Young V&A in Bethnal Green, the National Archives in Kew, and Somerset House Studios.
