Revolutionizing River Travel: Thames Unveils First Fully Electric Ferry for a Greener London

A brand new fully electric passenger ferry has officially set sail on the River Thames.

The Orbit Clipper, which will recharge overnight, is designed to transport passengers between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe every 10 minutes.

Gradually introduced into service, this ferry can accommodate 150 passengers and has the capacity for 100 bicycles, making crossings every 10 minutes during weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends.

Project leaders stated that the ferry contributes to the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2035 and achieving net zero by 2050.

The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, remarked: “This is an incredible new transport option for Londoners – not only is it cleaner and more sustainable than its predecessor, but it also facilitates faster and more accessible travel across the river for a larger number of people.

“Investing in innovations like this travel infrastructure will assist us in tackling the challenges our environment and economy face as we strive to create a fairer, greener, and better London for everyone.”

The launch of this new vessel coincides with London’s upcoming role as the host city for the World Triathlon Championship Series next July.

Ruth Daniels, CEO of British Triathlon, mentioned that the new ferry would provide “a unique and efficient route to the starting line” for participants.

She also noted: “With the capacity for up to 100 bicycles, the Orbit Clipper offers triathletes, commuters, tourists, and anyone traveling through London a more eco-friendly and convenient means of transport.”
