Russian law enforcement has filed charges against rapper Face for breaching the country’s “foreign agent” legislation, as reported by the exiled news outlet Mediazona on Monday.
In 2022, the Justice Ministry classified Face, whose real name is Ivan Dremin, as a “foreign agent” and has since imposed several fines on him for not complying with the legal requirements.
Face left Russia shortly after the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has pledged to never perform in Russia again. He has also taken down his music from Russian streaming services.
Mediazona reports that a criminal case against Face has been forwarded to the Kirovsky District Court in Ufa, his hometown. The court will now determine whether to proceed with a trial.
If convicted of multiple breaches of the obligations set for those identified as “foreign agents,” Face could face a prison sentence of up to two years, provided he is extradited to Russia.
This summer, Russia’s Interior Ministry issued an arrest warrant for him, but the specific charges at that time were unclear.
Face gained popularity in 2017 with the hit music video “Burger,” which offered a satirical look at internet-influenced youth culture. His 2018 album “Mysterious Ways” marked a turn towards political content, tackling issues like poverty, corruption, and mistreatment within Russia’s prison system.
He has also been a prominent advocate for the late opposition figure Alexei Navalny.
