Polar Bear Attack Injures Family Members in Isolated Siberian Village

Three family members, including a child, were injured in an unusual polar bear attack in the remote northern region of Siberia, as reported by Russian officials on Monday.

According to the regional Interior Ministry, local law enforcement “received a notification about a polar bear injuring individuals located 40 kilometers [25 miles] from the village of Nosok” at a fishing site.

Nosok is situated within the Krasnoyarsk area, inside the Arctic Circle.

The ministry noted, “Three individuals born in 1983, 2015, and 2006 sustained injuries during the polar bear incident.”

While attacks by polar bears on humans are deemed exceedingly rare, experts indicate that diminishing sea ice due to climate change is driving these animals closer to populated regions in search of food.

The family has been evacuated to safety and provided with prompt medical care.

The ministry did not disclose the severity of their injuries but mentioned that one individual might need hospitalization.
