Perm Musician Sentenced After Street Concert for Stoptime Solidarity

A court in the central Russian city of Perm has sentenced street musician Yekaterina Romanova to a week in detention following her involvement in a street concert that showed support for the group Stoptime from St. Petersburg, which has experienced multiple arrests over the past month, according to the independent news platform Sotavision on Monday.

Romanova was one of the organizers of a concert on October 22 aimed at expressing solidarity with Stoptime. Law enforcement did not intervene during this event.

During the concert, attendees performed “Svetlaya Polosa” by Noize MC, a song associated with Stoptime, along with protest songs such as “Peremen” by Kino and “Vse Idet Po Planu” by Yegor Letov.

The group had intended to hold a second concert on November 1, but later decided to cancel it. Romanova was arrested on the same day that the second concert was meant to take place.

In her Telegram channel, Romanova expressed her disappointment over the cancellation, stating, “I want to be able to sing without the fear of imprisonment. Music should not be intertwined with politics. It’s about emotions, feelings, and life itself. Currently, street musicians are being compromised, as a political narrative is being forced upon us. We are merely another channel for information; nothing more. Politics does not concern me. I am not politically involved.”

The authorities officially charged her with refusing to take a drug test, resulting in a seven-day detention starting from November 1.

Additionally, local news outlet Perm 36.6 reported that Romanova has been accused of “organizing a mass gathering of people in a public place.” She is scheduled for a hearing regarding these charges on November 6.

Sotavision mentioned that Romanova was held at the police station from November 1 to 3, where conditions were reportedly harsh, with cold temperatures and constant lighting, but she is now being relocated to a specialized detention facility.
