Operation Frostwatch: Police Crack Down on Illegal E-Bikes and Gang Activity in South-West London

Authorities have confiscated 37 unlawful or hazardous e-bikes and scooters during an initiative aimed at addressing crime and anti-social behavior in southwest London.

Police in Merton arrested 57 individuals during the month-long operation, which also resulted in the recovery of weapons and the issuance of a closure order for a property associated with gang activities.

The operation, named Frostwatch, was conducted from November 17 to December 24 and was centered on enhancing road safety, disrupting criminal organizations, and addressing issues raised by community members.

In addition to the e-bikes and scooters, law enforcement recovered seven knives, a firearm, and located 15 individuals who were wanted, including a registered sex offender.

A closure order was obtained for a residence in Pollards Hill, which authorities indicated was connected to gang-related activity.

Police expressed that this would assist in diminishing both crime and anti-social behavior while alleviating tensions between competing factions in the neighborhood.

Sgt Matthew Bower stated that addressing the criminal and anti-social usage of e-bikes and high-performance scooters was a top priority.

He noted that their usage was a “significant concern for local residents” and frequently associated with crimes such as street robberies and drug distribution.

“Seizing 37 e-bikes stands out as one of the operation’s major achievements,” he commented.
