New Round of POW Exchanges Reaffirms Ongoing Tensions Between Ukraine and Russia

On Friday, Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner exchange, according to officials, following recent peace discussions in Istanbul earlier this month.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced, “A number of Russian soldiers were returned from areas held by the Kyiv regime. In return, a contingent of Ukrainian prisoners of war was released.”

Details regarding the exact number of exchanged troops have not been revealed by either party. During negotiations in Istanbul, both nations agreed to the release of over 1,000 injured or ill servicemen, as well as soldiers under the age of 25.

A video shared by Russia’s Defense Ministry showed the released soldiers celebrating and chanting “Russia” while wrapped in their national flags.

Since the onset of the war, numerous prisoner exchanges have occurred.

Russia has dismissed demands for an unconditional ceasefire and continues to push forward with its military operations in Eastern Ukraine. Moscow insists that Kyiv must surrender additional territory and reduce its dependence on Western military aid as conditions for any ceasefire agreement.
