London Liverpool Street Retains Crown as UKs Busiest Station with Record 98 Million Passengers

For the third year in a row, Liverpool Street in London has been recognized as the busiest railway station in Britain.

By the end of March, approximately 98 million travelers passed through the station, marking a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year, as reported by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).

Following Liverpool Street, the next most frequented stations in the UK are Waterloo, Paddington, and Tottenham Court Road, with all of the top ten stations located in London.

Outside of the capital, Birmingham New Street ranks as the busiest station, coming in at 13th overall with 36.6 million passengers. In contrast, the least busy station was Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire, which recorded a mere 68 entries and exits.

Completing the top ten are London Bridge, Victoria, Stratford, Farringdon, Bond Street, and Euston.

The list of leading stations has evolved, with four of the top ten now serviced by the newest railway in the UK, the Elizabeth line, which commenced operations in 2022.

The rail regulator indicated that passenger exit and entry estimates are primarily based on ticket sales.

Beyond London, Manchester Piccadilly (27.4 million) and Leeds (27.3 million) follow closely behind Birmingham New Street in terms of usage.

In Scotland, Glasgow Central stands as the busiest station with 25.3 million users, narrowly surpassing Edinburgh Waverley, which recorded 22.8 million entries and exits.

Cardiff Central takes the title of busiest station in Wales with 12.5 million pass-throughs.

Elton and Orston, the least active station, is served by a single East Midlands Railway train in each direction daily, from Monday to Saturday. One train heads towards Nottingham, while the other goes towards Skegness. This station lacks staffing, seating, and restroom facilities.
