Leicester Square Faces Busking Ban: Council Suspends Performances Following Court Order

Westminster City Council has paused two busking performance locations in Leicester Square to adhere to a court decision.

This decision stems from a legal dispute between Global Radio and the council, where a judge mandated that the local authority address the “nuisance” created by buskers.

Matt Noble, a representative from Westminster City Council, stated that while street performers are cherished, the council has a legal responsibility to respond.

He emphasized that street performers are not being entirely prohibited throughout Westminster.

Noble remarked, “Street performers contribute significantly to our city’s character, yet we must also consider our obligation to safeguard local residents and businesses. The court’s ruling leaves us with no alternative—we are now required by law to take action.”

He mentioned that the next course of action involves reviewing the court’s decision and seeking a fair resolution.

The suspension will take effect on April 17 and will remain in place until further notice, impacting both licensed and unlicensed street performers and entertainers in Leicester Square.

Individuals who violate the new regulations may be subject to enforcement measures, including fines, seizure of equipment, or revocation of their licenses, according to a council spokesperson.

This decision follows an abatement order issued against the council by the City of London Magistrates’ Court on March 26.

It is reported that Westminster City Council plans to examine potential grounds for appeal and to make adjustments to its licensing framework for busking and street performances.
