Latest Body Exchange: Russia and Ukraine Repatriate 950 Fallen Soldiers

Russia and Ukraine confirmed on Friday that they have conducted an exchange involving the remains of 950 soldiers who lost their lives, marking the second such transaction in less than a month.

According to Shamsail Saraliyev, a member of the State Duma, Russia received the remains of 41 soldiers, while Ukraine repatriated 909 of its servicemen, as indicated by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

The fallen Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly killed at the front in the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, as well as in the northeastern Sumy region, where Ukraine asserts that Russian forces are gearing up for a new offensive.

The exchanges of prisoners of war and deceased soldiers are among the few channels of dialogue still active between the two nations since Russia initiated its large-scale invasion of Ukraine over three years ago.

This latest exchange follows a swap on March 28, where the bodies of 909 Ukrainian soldiers were returned in exchange for 43 Russian soldiers. This is the eighth exchange involving the remains of 500 or more Ukrainian soldiers since October.

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CBS News that up to 100,000 Ukrainian troops may have been killed since February 2022. Russia has not revised its official casualty figures since the fall of 2022, when it reported fewer than 6,000 combat fatalities.

An independent analysis by Mediazona and BBC News Russia has identified the names of approximately 100,000 deceased Russian soldiers using publicly available data.

Reports from AFP also contributed to this information.
