Hungary and Slovakia Face Oil Supply Crisis Following Ukrainian Pipeline Assault

Russian oil exports to Hungary and Slovakia were halted on Monday due to what Budapest described as the second Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Druzhba pipeline in a fortnight.

“Ukraine has once again launched an attack on the oil pipeline supplying Hungary, interrupting deliveries. This latest assault on our energy security is outrageous and intolerable,” wrote Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on X.

He went on to mention that Russian authorities had informed him that technicians were attempting to restore a vital transformation station necessary for the functioning of the Druzhba pipeline. Szijjarto quoted Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin, who stated that it was unclear when shipments would recommence.

“For the past three and a half years, Brussels and Kyiv have sought to involve Hungary in the conflict in Ukraine. These continuous Ukrainian attacks on our energy supply align with that same aim,” the foreign minister wrote. “This is not our conflict. We are not part of it, and as long as we oversee matters, Hungary will remain uninvolved.”

Later on Monday, the Slovakian pipeline operator Transpetrol also reported that oil supplies to Slovakia had been suspended, adding that it had no additional details regarding the cause of the interruption.

Just last Thursday, Szijjarto claimed that Ukrainian drones had targeted an oil pumping station on the Druzhba pipeline, disrupting operations. At that time, Sorokin had indicated that deliveries might resume by the following Friday.

The European Union imposed a ban on most Russian oil imports following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but the Druzhba pipeline was exempted, as it continues to serve Hungary and Slovakia. The Czech Republic previously relied on this Russian pipeline as well but ceased its deliveries early this year after linking to an alternative pipeline in Italy.
