Local residents are understandably furious after a cricket pitch in Croydon was vandalized, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

There is ongoing concern about acts of vandalism in Norbury Park following the damage that was reported on August 18.

Jenni Rodgers, the leader of the Friends of Norbury Park group, expressed her frustration, stating, “We’re now waiting for a new pitch to be installed. I’m just fed up with this blatant disrespect.”

A representative from Croydon Council commented, “Our parks team has made the area safe by clearing away the dangerous debris, but unfortunately, the pitch is currently out of commission. We will be collaborating with the police and urge anyone with information to reach out to them.”

Regular park visitor John Kuhrt described the destruction on Facebook as “a proper demolition job” rather than mere “mindless vandalism.”

Reflecting on past occurrences, Ms. Rodgers noted, “Every time we take positive action, it seems there’s an immediate backlash of vandalism. We installed two notice boards, and those were vandalized as well.”

Both Ms. Rodgers and Deborah Bestwick from the Norbury Village Green Residents’ Association conveyed to the LDRS their growing frustration over the litter often left on the pitch after weekend matches, saying, “We’re really starting to have had enough of it.”

The Friends group frequently organizes litter clean-ups in the park and collaborates with the council’s contractors to maintain its cleanliness.

Addressing the vandalism, Ms. Bestwick remarked, “All involved organizations are deeply upset by this. It’s incredibly damaging.”

Norbury Labour councillor Shafi Khan originally pursued funding for the pitch back in 2019, obtaining support from the council, which is now tasked with its maintenance and repair, according to LDRS.

A spokesperson for Croydon Council further added, “We are outraged by this heinous act of vandalism against a community asset in Norbury Park, which has affected and disheartened the local community.”

“We have reported the incident to the police and appreciate the residents who have reached out to the Council to report this senseless act of destruction.”
