Despite last week’s successful High Court challenge against Lambeth Council, festivals in a south London park are set to continue this summer.

Brockwell Park in Lambeth is the venue for a range of events known as Brockwell Live, which draw hundreds of thousands of attendees across six festivals, including the Mighty Hoopla.

Local resident Rebekah Shaman, who is also part of the Protect Brockwell Park group, initiated legal proceedings against the council regarding the use of specific areas of the park for these festivals, scheduled to start on May 23 this year.

Her case was based on planning regulations that restrict altering the use of parks for more than 28 days annually without the necessary additional planning approval.

In the proceedings, Mr. Justice Mould determined that portions of the park would be occupied for these festivals for up to 37 days.

The judge clarified that his ruling pertained solely to the legality of the council’s authorization for the extra days of use.

On Monday, a representative from Lambeth Council stated that Summer Events Ltd, the parent company, has requested a new certificate of lawfulness for 24 days in light of the High Court’s ruling.

“The council is promptly reviewing that application. This assessment does not impede the scheduled events,” the statement noted.

A spokesperson for Brockwell Live affirmed: “Brockwell Live can confirm that all events in the lineup will proceed as scheduled, including the Lambeth Country Show.

“The High Court ruling addressed a specific legal issue and whether an administrative procedure was properly followed.

“We want to assure everyone that no events will be canceled due to the High Court’s verdict.”

They also mentioned that preparations for Friday’s Wide Awake festival were nearly finalized.
