The Barbican Centre in London has revealed new design concepts as it prepares to renovate three of its iconic areas: the conservatory, the lakeside, and the foyers.

These proposed enhancements, which feature a new water element, are part of a broader revitalization initiative, with construction slated to commence in 2027.

The aim is to finalize the improvements two years prior to the Barbican’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2030.

In a previous announcement, the cultural landmark, designated as Grade II listed and inaugurated in 1982, recognized that the structure had “declined considerably” over the years.

Following a consultation earlier this year where over 90% of participants endorsed the initial plans, the designs have undergone revisions.

The Centre engaged two co-design groups, including participants aged 18-30, in this reworking of the plans.

Proposed changes encompass upgrades to the lakeside terrace and a redesign of the foyers to enhance inclusivity and facility quality.

Philippa Simpson, Director of Buildings and Renewal, expressed, “We have been truly inspired by the public’s interest in our proposals.”

“These new designs illustrate a vision for the Barbican Centre that honors our distinctive heritage and bold identity while ensuring it remains an inclusive, sustainable, and meaningful space for all.”

In December, the City of London Corporation, the founder and primary financial backer of the Centre, along with fundraising efforts, allocated £240 million to facilitate the initial five-year phase of renovations.

Last year, an assessment by consultants indicated that the Barbican Centre requires £451 million in vital repairs.

This renovation plan is intended to be implemented over the next 20 to 25 years and includes essential infrastructure repairs and replacements to meet accessibility and net-zero goals.

The second phase of public consultation is scheduled to continue until June 2.
