On Friday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man suspected of planning an attack on a military parade that took place earlier this month in the Kaliningrad region.
Authorities stated that the individual intended to detonate an explosive device along the parade route during the event on May 9, which honors the Soviet victory in World War II.
The FSB reported that a Ukrainian handler recruited the suspect through Telegram, providing him with guidance on executing the attack.
In a video released by state media, the suspect, whose identity was obscured, mentioned that he connected with an unknown Ukrainian “coordinator” last month and received $150 in cryptocurrency for taking photos during a parade rehearsal on May 5.
“I was instructed to retrieve an explosive device from a storage site and was promised $205,000,” he claimed in the video.
It remains unclear whether he made these statements voluntarily or under coercion.
The FSB indicated that if convicted of planning sabotage and terrorism, the man could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
