Former Met Officer David Carrick Faces Additional Sentencing for Decades-Long Pattern of Sexual Abuse

David Carrick, a former Metropolitan Police officer and serial rapist, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl as well as a former partner.

The 50-year-old, who is currently serving a life sentence, was found guilty of abusing the young girl in the late 1990s and raping the woman during a relationship over two decades later.

At the Old Bailey, jurors determined he was guilty of nine charges and he is expected to receive his sentence on Thursday.

Carrick, hailing from Stevenage, is already facing a minimum sentence of 32 years after admitting to 71 sexual violence offenses spanning 17 years.

In court, Carrick was dressed in a suit and tie, flanked by four prison officers. He shook his head repeatedly as the jury announced their decisions.

After five hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict on the charges against him.

Shilpa Shah, the lawyer leading both prosecutions by the Crown Prosecution Service, commented on the recent case, stating, “The compelling testimonies from these women clearly illustrated the relentless abuse they suffered without consent. One victim was a child at the time of her indecent assault, while another faced sexual abuse from him during his time as a senior police officer.”

She emphasized the necessity of prosecuting him again due to the severity of his crimes and the public interest, particularly given his position within the police while committing some of the offenses, as well as to highlight the extensive nature of his wrongdoing which lasted for decades.

The Hertfordshire Police commended the courage of the victims and encouraged others to come forward.

During the trial, jurors learned that Carrick had abused the young girl for approximately 18 months before she disclosed the incidents to her mother. He admitted to the abuse in a letter found among his medical records, signed simply “Dave.”

It was also revealed that the other victim endured a “toxic relationship,” marked by repeated rape. A police interview played in court showcased her describing how Carrick had strangled her, used abusive language, and forcibly expelled her from their home. She reflected on their relationship as “quite traumatizing – I wish I’d never met him.”

Carrick opted not to testify in the current Old Bailey trial, having denied the new allegations, while previously admitting to the earlier charges during hearings in 2022 and 2023. Prosecutor Tom Little KC remarked that Carrick’s silence was “deafening.”

Despite his written confession, Carrick dismissed the allegations of child abuse, labeling the victim as a liar. He also contended in an interview at Full Sutton prison that his encounters with his ex-partner were consensual and accused her of being influenced by the MeToo movement.

The sentencing hearing is set to commence on Thursday morning.
