Falling Into the Abyss: Mysterious Deaths of Russian Elites Amid Unseen Perils

Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been an increasing number of mysterious or violent deaths among Russian officials, business leaders, and public figures. Many of these individuals reportedly fell from windows or balconies.

While some of these fatalities have been officially classified as accidents or suicides, the sheer frequency and circumstances surrounding these deaths have led to speculation that some victims may have been deliberately pushed from heights due to their political opinions, links to corruption, or knowledge deemed unwelcome.

The Moscow Times has compiled an ongoing list of notable cases over the past three years.

One individual was discovered dead outside his office in what appeared to be a suicide. A note left behind reportedly expressed remorse to his wife, outlined financial instructions, and asked that no one be held responsible for his death.

Another reportedly fell from a 10th-floor window during a police search of his residence as he was being investigated for allegedly being part of a “terrorist organization” associated with fundraising for the Ukrainian military. He had openly criticized the war on social media.

One person died in the hospital after being found on the ground outside his west Moscow apartment, having fallen from the window. Pro-Kremlin sources claimed he had a lung condition and was taking potent medication for pain relief.

Another individual allegedly fell from a window at his residence in the upscale Moscow suburb of Rublyovka. Police sources indicated it was likely a suicide; reports suggested he sent a goodbye message to his wife, and his body was located by a security guard.

A woman was thought to have leapt from a window after falling victim to phone scammers who posed as court officials and convinced her to transfer 2 million rubles (approximately $25,600) before she realized she had been defrauded. A suicide note was said to have been found at her death scene.

Another man was found dead in the courtyard of his Moscow apartment building, having apparently fallen from a window. A suicide note blaming doctors was discovered, along with a farewell to his wife, though family members noted he had not shown signs of suicidal tendencies earlier that day. He was known to be suffering from serious health issues, including cancer.

A man fell from the fifth-floor balcony of his apartment in St. Petersburg in what authorities labeled an accident, suggesting he lost his balance while smoking on a narrow ledge. Skhlyarov, who had criticized the war in Ukraine, had a spinal injury, was on strong painkillers in preparation for surgery, and was reportedly facing addiction and personal difficulties.

Someone fell from the seventh-floor window of an Investigative Committee office during questioning related to a criminal corruption matter. Surveillance footage reportedly captured him sitting on the windowsill before the fall.

A woman plunged from the 16th-floor window of her St. Petersburg apartment. Just a week before her death, pro-war bloggers had criticized newly classified military uniform prices, which a company awarded a contract for tailoring had leaked.

Another case involved a man who reportedly fell from scaffolding at his dacha while repair work was underway, located 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Yekaterinburg.

One individual allegedly fell from the 12th-floor window of his apartment after initially leaving for work at 4:15 a.m. but returned home. His wife discovered his body after calling his phone while walking their dogs at 6 a.m. and hearing it ring nearby in a courtyard.

A woman fell from the 11th-floor window of a rented accommodation following a party. Media outlets claimed to have footage of her arguing with her boyfriend in an elevator and another video shot by him showing her balancing on the balcony before her fatal fall.

According to colleagues from the ruling United Russia party, another man fell from the third-story window of his home in what they termed an accident. Reports indicated he stepped outside for fresh air after feeling unwell and fell to his death after losing consciousness.

One individual was found dead on the sidewalk outside his apartment building in Washington, D.C., after police responded to reports of a jumper. Officials described his death as a suspected suicide.

Another man fell from the sixth-floor window of the Central Clinical Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a severe cardiovascular disease and was reportedly also suffering from depression.

A man fell from his balcony in Nizhny Novgorod while police were reportedly conducting a search in connection with an unverified criminal investigation. Local media reported he had opened the door for the police, signed a search warrant, allowed them inside, then went to his balcony and fell.

Lastly, a man was found dead in a pool of blood outside his hotel in Odisha, India, two days after his traveling companion, Vladimir Bidenov, passed away from what appeared to be a heart attack. Indian authorities stated that Antov might have fallen from the roof, while local officials denied any foul play but were “verifying all possible angles.”
